Why are we using email less lately?

Here’s a telling study that measured the Year-over-year use of email across all age ranges.

Not all that surprising to find that teens (12-17) are using it less than anyone considering how popular social networks and text messaging have become.  Although it’s slightly surprising to see that the decline in email use carries all the way from ages 12-54.

I’ve got one big, obvious takeaway from this Study.

Our future customers won’t be checking their email all that often. At least not near as much as their text message or tweets.

This can only mean one thing, engaging in social media with these youngsters will be a vital part of our business futures. The other vital part will be text messaging and mobile advertising, which most of us are already starting to move into.

The reality is that the younger generations are faster paced and have much less patience than the older generations.  Texting and social media are much faster and more open than traditional emailing.

    I am quite agree with Ryan. I do have 15K mails pending for reading but no spare time for them.
    and Social media is the great platform where we can make a healthy business.
    I know an example of social media power -it’s an story of a guitar player and he was flying through air with a well known company and during transit his guitar damaged. he asked to air company for his guitar payments but company denied. he sang a song and published on YouTube within a short span of 3-4 months that video was viewed about 1 million times and then that air company asked him to remove the video from YT in replacement to that they were agree to pay him many thousand of dollars.
    So believe me friends the Social Media Power –its unlimited.

    and email study sometime wont work they just dont bother you if they dont know who you are but another study for attraction is to be honest on your business and patient not reckless sending to them it wont work if they click your site it just like a window shopping nothing so special on your website instead they can get more on this suggestion should listen from it concern.

    I totally agree with this study. I use text to communicate with my family on a daily basis. Text messages are opened and read faster than email and less intrusive than a phone call. I am building a list using text marketing and even recruiting agents to sell text marketing on my team. So where I used to promote Aweber and Constant contact as an affiliate, now I promote mobile text marketing as an affiliate and it is a great way for businesses to get ahead of the marketing curve.
    I don’t see email totally going away, it’s just not as exciting as when AOL first stated out with the “You’ve Got Mail” and we all loved it. Now we all love texting.

    Hi Ryan,

    This is interesting but I think we should look at more than one study to draw conclusions.

    Not too long ago I read a study on eMarketer that actually showed email usage increasing as use of social media became more popular.

    This makes sense considering a lot of social networks like Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube actually send you emails when someone has messaged you on the social network.

    I do tend to agree that email is old school but it is here to stay and capturing your prospects email address when they come to your website is important.

    After spending time in the Philippines, it seemed that almost everyone was in the habit of texting. It is the mainstream there, where phone contracts were non-existan. Everything was prepaid and texting is the cheapest way to go. We have a long way to go in order to catch up with the Asian countries and culture.

    In Japan, they don’t have a phone number, they only have an email address…
    So there is no difference between an email and a text message.
    I think that it is the future. You are outside, you check your emails with your phone, you are at home, you check them with your computer… and all the boxes are synchronized !

    It is like the new messaging on Facebook. You have got one thread with the private messages (the emails) and the IM (the text messages).
