Promoted Trends Arrive at Twitter?
Posted on by Ryan Deiss in Social Media
Twitter is in the process of rolling out promoted tweets, so needless to say their monetization ball is rolling. And apparently all the new money coming in has their creative juices flowing too.
Twitter has announced they are in a testing period for Promoted Trends. You’ve Probably noticed it on your Twitter page.
Off the bat, I like this because it shows that Twitter is aiming to have a diverse and profound Ad platform for its users. They are really going after it, and we have a lot to look forward to.
Here’s what we know so far about how Promoted Trends will work. An advertiser can purchase a spot on the trends list that a user sees. When the promoted trend is click on, the user will arrive at a results page that would list the advertisers promoted tweet at the top of the list.
Some talk seems to allude that a promoted trend spot for a whole day could cost tens of thousands of dollars. Sounds like a lot, but the right offer could easily be worth that kind of investment.
Twitter is still testing how this will all look and work. But what do you think about this? Comment Below and let me know.

I noticed a promoted trend the other day. Maybe I am the odd man out, but I don’t often look at the trends, at least not as a Twitter user.
Now, if you are looking at marketing and staying up on the pulse of what potential customers are discussing, I will look at it as part of a whole research effort. if other end users are like me that would mean that the best target audience for this new paid element are companies that are targeting marketers!

@Kip (@entrecon), I look at Trends quite a bit when I’m doing my daily Tweeting to get involved with my twitter followers. Since it’s such a highly referenced section of Twitter, I can see this being a good spot for any sort of marketer.

@Randall Stevenson,
I guess that is my point. You are looking to engage with your followers using those terms, you aren’t just posting about your day. You have a reason for looking, you are part of the target market I am referencing.
Many users don’t even use the twitter.com interface. If you use a tool like Tweetdeck or a Twitter App on your smart phone, chances are you NEVER see the trending topics.
I am not saying this decreases the value, I am saying it INCREASES the value because an advertiser has a targeted market. However, it would decrease the value for some advertisers because they don’t sell their product or service to that market.

Great info Ryan! I think this shows good promise for the future of the Twitter Ads platform.

I just noticed this today and was wondering what’s up with the (promoted) next to the Trend. Seems to me like this is going to be good for those who can actually afford it.
