Back in 2006, a good friend bet me that I couldn’t write out my entire business model on a single napkin.
I took his bet, and right then and there - in the bar at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas, TX - I grabbed a cocktail napkin and drew out my business model. What I wrote on that napkin has easily been worth many MILLIONS to me, which is why I now refer to it as my “Million Dollar Napkin”.
I’ve never shared the contents of this napkin with the public, but for a limited time you can see it with your own eyes in the video below:

Hey Ryan,
I was actually at your bootcamp in Dallas when you came up with your business model on the napkin.
Very cool and a great concept…

Hey Ryan,
Great Video! Love the information. I just launched my site and I think I have an SLO but it’s free. Does that qualify as SLO b/c yours had a cost?
Here’s mine. It’s a free report “$45,000 Debt to Cash”.

I still have to work on the continuity part of the business model but it’s coming. Not quick enough though
thanks again for the business model. I will be including some aspects to mine.

Hi Ryan, nice videos you’ve got here. I just wanna share some of my thoughts regarding your ideas on continuity program.
In the video, you said a business ‘WON’T’ thrive without a continuity program and I don’t 100% agree with that.
Think about this, Hollywood have to create new movies from scratch time to time and this is also the same to internet marketers.
While having a continuity program that generates ongoing residual income is without doubt the greatest business model in the world, attrition rate will be there if customer’s high expectations can’t be met.
There was once I promoted an ebook in a niche market as an affiliate via PPC and made easy money of around $1,500 net profit per month for that product.
That affiliate niche was one of my most profitable niche back then but when that imbecile owner got greedy and stupid converting his ebook business model to a video training membershipsite (continuity program), it practically killed all affiliate sales overnight and I’m not kidding here.
Before membership site = $1,500 of net profit with about 50 sales.
After membership site = ($300) of net loss from PPC with ZERO sales.
Probably sounds unbelievable but it’s true and I swear to god of what I’ve just said. Continuity program don’t always work 100% however I know there are exceptions in many cases. I don’t know why it happened but most probably it’s due to a higher price point and financial commitment.
While I’m not really saying that continuity program don’t work, it just have to be done professionally to meet customer’s high expectations so that it can thrive and it only works well on certain type of businesses.
Some of the most successful ‘continuity program’ I know are from webhosting, autoresponder companies (Aweber - they must be making a killing without a slightest bit of doubt) and of course Google Adwords.
For offline companies, I don’t really need to mention them here because you can think of many of them.
Just my 2 cents here.
Cheers.

Great stuff. Thanks very much. Wonderful to be reminded of the value of continuity programs as I start up a new business.
I was part of one of your 30 days to 10k lucky 25 in 2007 - I did get in a knot with British Merchant accounts and chose the wrong market, but REALLY grateful to you for a wonderful experience in building what could have been a viable business. I can approach the internet with leagues more confidence now…

Ryan,
Fantastic video. That really is a great business model too. A question I have: does this model work the best for info. products or can it be adapted to physical products too? I make and market a nutritional supplement, so the continuity part is no problem. Coming up with the big ticket item is kind of a stumbling block for me. I think the low-ticket SLO is ideal vs. having it $0 (giving away something) because you want buyers here, not freebie seekers.
So, it’s time to sharpen the pencil and come up with my own version of this.
Thanks so much and I look forward to the other videos.
August 25th, 2008 at 3:45 pm
Great Info Ryan!
I also have my business model but not written in a napkin but in a small paper used to carry my pizza! All the details are written amongst dirty spots of fat.
I stored this piece into my desk to remember my beginnings.

Thanks for the terrific video Ryan!
With a solid conversion process, that business model could be used to become a major player in any niche.
If possible, could you please reveal how you were able to find guys like Jason and Nathan to help in your niche businesses and discuss how you structure deals with them?
I think using the knowledge and passion of people like them is great for expanding into new niches, so anyone info you could provide would be awesome.
Thanks again Ryan for the video.

Excellent video, Ryan!
I’m currently doing *some* of what you talked about (upselling), and can vouch for the success of this model. Now I just need to ramp things up with a better continuity product.
I hope you’ll share more about how to market the continuity program, without being sneaky.
Thanks and keep’em coming!
Joe
REPLY FROM RYAN: Yep, I’ll be covering a number of different continuity strategies and my #1 rule for all of them is DISCLOSE, DISCLOSE, DISCLOSE. Sneakiness only gets you in trouble and ruins your relationship with your customers.

Great video, thanks! Most of us try to make this thing way to hard.
Just curious, what tool or device are you using to draw so well in Camtasia? Is it a pen that plugs into your computer? I can’t write or draw anything using the mouse. : )
Either you mastered drawing with the mouse or you got an A+ with stickers, and smile faces in pen class in 3rd grade.
Thanks, Charles
REPLY FROM RYAN: Definitely no A+ in pen class…I use a Wacom board.

Thanks, Ryan, for avoiding hype when you promote and teach. I took your 30 Days to 10K program and developed a continuity program.
Question: Are quality “free” reports bad for my business? I offer many free credit repair reports & videos. Are your SLOs considered so inexpensive a person couldn’t go wrong buying them?
How do you promote SLOs?

Ryan;
Thanks for the high value content!
Not only was the flow diagram for the Marketing Funnel informative but the sample price points for the front-end and back-end products were important to know.
How did you locate a reliable and trustworthy outbound calling service (google search, yellow-pages, word-of-mouth) and are there any special instructions you have to give to the service to make certain you get what you want out of them?
August 28th, 2008 at 1:09 am
the link to the 2nd video is not working
REPLY FROM RYAN: It worked for me…please try it again.
August 28th, 2008 at 4:40 am
There definitely seem to be some deliverability issues with the emails.
I signed up twice, but did not get any email for a whole day. So the next day I signed up again, using a different email address that uses GMail to handle its incoming email. The email ended up in GMail’s Spam folder. Luckily, I was expecting something like that to happen, so I kept checking.
To be sure, I signed up using a third email address that doesn’t use GMail, and this time the email came through just fine.
So three different email addresses, and three different results. Not sure what’s up, or what’s happening.
If the content wasn’t SO great, I wouldn’t have gone this far to make sure I get the rest of it of course, so that says a lot about how impressed I am with the video. Awesome and amazing don’t begin to describe it.
Oh, and by the way, I still haven’t got any notification about the second video in the series (at any of the three email addresses I signed up with). I happened to come back to this post, to check if there are any updates, and see there is a link to a new post about the next video in the series. What happened to the email?
Thanks,
Rohit Sinha

Ryan,
Thank you for the great information, I’ve been interested in your training since The Big Seminar. My programmers and the rest of my staff are positioned to move all of our online products to the membership site model. We are installing Amember this week and are waiting for your product launch. My email address davidrmichalek@gmail.com. Thank you.
September 2nd, 2008 at 7:20 pm
I think I saw this “napkin thing” somewhere else. I’m amazed at how you could come up with such a business plan so thoroughly thought out before you even knew what you were doing, and that plan has carried you through every internet business you have built since then.
When I first started I would never have thought of anything you put on that napkin. All I wanted was a product to sell and there was absolutely no foresight on my part as to what I would do once that product stopped selling (or in some cases didn’t sell at all).
I think I need help getting a continuity program off the ground…seems to be what I’m lacking.
Thanks,

Is it safe to assume that once your purchasers move into the continuity program or buy the small ticket item then they are removed off the orginial email list and onto another one?

Hey Ryan,
I’ve been trying to watch your videos, but they don’t load all the way and end up hanging? I’m guessing it has to do with ezs3.com, but I could be wrong. The rest of the website loads except the video.
I’d like to watch the videos, but I can’t if it doesn’t load.
Do you happen to have them posted some where else?

Hey Ryan -
I absolutely love your videos mate. Solid information, well delivered. Contrary to the chap who got bored and moved on, I was riveted to the spot, hanging on every word you had to say. It’s made me rethink how I’m going to sell in my niches.
Could you also clarify one thing for me please. After the self liquidating offer, do you go immediately into the small ticket upsell and then into the big ticket offer? In which case, where does the continuity offer kick in? Is it part of the small ticket upsell or it’s own membership site offer?
Cheers!

It’s all about growth and reinvesting back into the funnel. Hi Ryan,
I only saw your napkin today although I read about it often during the last weeks (time …).
While following your pen and your concept - and I was fascinated by the clear and direct way you explained the individual phases -I had the continuity program in mind as the special opportunities and just like Mike Mindel I wonder when you introduce these opportunities to your visitors.
Wouldn’t to say these should only be offered to customers ‘leave money on the table’?

Ryan -
The first takeaway is being able to explain your business model on a napkin. Great lesson. For me, a business consultant and coach, your illustration serves as a great example for many businesses out there. Continuity can work for so many more companies.
At the end of the video you asked “if you like this video….” I didn’t like it. I loved it.

Well, just like everything else. Its a wonderful idea that needs real no nonsense application for its continuity. The very important factor
to keep it going on. However, what is required is a tight plan for the
execution never to fall off.
October 13th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
Great video. However, WHY would you “cast your pearls before swine” and devulge all of the insight and knowledge that’s gotten you to where you are now? Doesn’t make sense. You said it yourself, if there are more options (competition) then it makes it that much harder to make money.
Just curious.

Thank YOU Ryan for all of your hard work and generosity! The videos were eye-opening and made me realize how much I don’t know and who will teach me what I need to know next - YOU….

Unable to tear myself away from your 3 videos and wrote so many notes my fingers hurt. So many ideas popped into my head as you were speaking that surely I will be tossing and turning all night, digesting what you so freely gave to us.
Thanks to Keith Wellman for sending me the email to go watch your “4 measly little sales……”

Thank YOU Ryan again,

Ryan,
Thanks so much, that’s the simplest way I’ve ever seen an InfoPreneur’s Business explained,… and with a Flow Chart too! ;0)
One thing that isn’t clear for me,… do you direct the SLO directly to the ‘continuity first’ or to the ’small ticket upsell’?
Great video, look forward to watching the next in the series.
Keep Well!

REPLY FROM RYAN: Your customers get rolled into continuity either as a forced or optional bonus to the main offer, then they get offered the first upsell. The continuity “upsell” isn’t a 2nd step.
By the way, I prefer optional continuity over pure forced continuity. If you’re gonna do forced continuity you need to do it ethically.

Great video, great concept, great illustration!
Really awesome to see someone explaining something without all the hype and sales stuff.
This is as clear and concise as any I’ve seen on an internet business model. It’s great that it adds value not only to the business owner but the customers as well - what a concept!
Great job!

ABSOLUTELY agree with you on this Ryan!
All the millionaires in our ‘Conversations with Millionaires’ book say the very same kind of thing (among a ton of other killer ideas of course).
Simple is almost ALWAYS the best way to go!
Huge kudos to you for sharing this because it simplifies things and makes it easier for people to get on the road to the big time themselves! Way to go superstar!
You’re one of the good guys out there Ryan. So keep up the GREAT work man!

Hi Ryan…first of all, I’m super impressed with the video and at how much you shared. Thank you. Your video has taken free line content to the next level.
I’m still fairly new to the internet side of things, but I’m intrigued at what could happen applying some concepts of continuity to a brick and mortar business personal training business.
We are also looking to release a series of training DVDs and manuals to hyper niched market.
Like you, I am located in Austin, TX. I was wondering if you were a part of any local mastermind groups and/or what local resources you would recommend for learning and networking with other internet marketers.
I’d be thrilled to buy you lunch to meet another successful young guy and chat. It never hurts to ask.
Cheers to my fellow Texan,
Trent

The continuity model is nothing new…in fact, Multi-Level Marketing (aka Network Marketing) has *always* been based on monthly re-orders. That’s why the business model works so well on consumable products!
And the funnel concept IS the way it’s done (other than those 1 product companies that don’t GET the Power behind the model).
Why do you think there are SO many 6 figure Monthly Income Earners?
When you “treat it like a business”, the Income Potential is unlimited!
Plus when you add “Leverage” with other people’s efforts, it can get truly crazy to reach 7 Figures!
So where’s the leverage in your model Ryan?
October 14th, 2008 at 4:51 pm
Hello Ryan, I am an affiliate for a continuity programe, your napkin gave me ideas of how to get more people there! thank you. sean

Thanks. The concept of continuity definitely hit home. A little bit of a reality check, but thanks…

Hi Ryan,
Great information!
With so much junk online it’s nice to see someone give a simple, straightforward business plan that should be in place for any online business.
Thank you!

Being a complete extreme novice newbie to IM, I have found your training invaluable. Thank you sincerely for sharing. Your presentation was clear and precise on your napkin business model. Thanks again.

Ryan,
I have been one of your Content Goldmine for a LONG time. You have again gone beyond just hype and provided real working information for anyone serious enough to act on what they have seen.

A systematic yet simple approach. What a concept! Beautifully done. Congratulations on both your success and bringing it forward.
The challenge is always that the “newbie” will feel confused and upset by the overabundance of technology, know how, and application. But we all started somewhere. At least with your blueprint, the newbie knows where they need to go.

Great stuff Ryan.

Thanks,

THanks!

I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed nyour presentation. This is the closest I have come to finding something that is not pure BS, and that does not stand for Belief System, It is very good. If I had the coins necessary I would be one of the first to buy your videos. I think you have a fantastic system and a viable way of putting it across.
Thanks,

Hey Ryan.. great video and congrats on all your success. I know that it makes all that work worthwhile.. and you certainly have your ‘why’ in the right place.. family is #1.

Hi Ryan,
Great stuff! I’ve seen similar sales funnels set up like this, but I don’t recall where. You obviously know what you’re talking about with all the success you had with Nicheology (you’re missed over there, by the way) and other memberships.
I’m curious, you showed that there would reach a point of equal new sign ups and attrition at around the 5th month, which makes sense. I was wondering if you’ve ever tested the membership as a “course” or “limited time” membership like 6 or 9 months? It might have an affect on sign ups, but most people would have a hard time dropping out if they already had money invested and were halfway through. Do you see what I mean? I don’t know the average numbers beyond that point, but it was just a thought.
Can’t wait for the next videos.

Great series of videos - you clearly conveyed your business model - adding in extremely helpful percentages that one can expect based on your experience. All together this makes your message very motivating - knowing both what to shoot for, and some very clear tactics on How-To Get There.
Frankly - I’ve listened to and read a lot of advice - but you come straight through with the kind of confidence that gets across sincerity, along with enthusiasm.
One other note - over the years I’ve actually studied some of the strategies you mention - and put some to good use - but your combining everything together, clearly and with dollar figure examples “rings the bell” - to Start Putting it All Together.
So - Thanks very much - and I’ll look forward to more.

Hey Jonathan readers posters happy campers one n all … super doper videos strange Ive never seen any one outline a business model like this before what a great way to convey a “how to succeed online blueprint” it brought memories of my off line business a few years ago when I would burn the midnight oil trying to map out a business forecast for my accountant for the next day … so after seeing your video turned on the light bulb in my mind and I had a buzz of an idea to write down my own million dollar napkin business marketing funnel because seeing the 1st video made me realize I only was thinking two steps ahead so thanks for this information you are sharing I for one want to hang around with you from now on I’m sure your as genuine as you look and sound thanks for the insight to how to do an online business correctly
All my best to you and your multi successes

Beautiful & Systematic way to plan and build your Business
I think the napkin idea provides a very good way to plan your business.
I can think immediately of two key benefits
1) Allows you to see the key components of your business.
2) Scalability
Two of the key things if done well can allow you to have freedom to run your business instead of having your business run your life. A Biggie, in your own words!
Great concept

nice job, Ryan! clear - best summary I have seen of the overall emerging business model in this area. It brought lots of thoughts and ideas for my new and older businesses. also thanks for the specifics - really bring credibility to what you are explaining. everything is illuminated. thank, tom

Ryan:
Do all the sales or elements on the left of the napkin also attempt to add customers to the continuity program? Or do you only allow continuity members to the increasingly larger sales?
October 15th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Ryan -
Interesting information. I think many people understand this process and just don’t realize how the pieces fit together. I’m just thinking out loud here - is it reasonable to think that you have to have the “Big Ticket” item developed completely and work backwards up the process to create a sustainable model?
October 15th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Ryan,
Great video. I spoke at a recent event with Matt Bacak and he’s the one who turned me on to your videos. I’ve already sent them to many of my Internet marketing colleagues. I have a book coming out with John Wiley & Sons entitled eBoot Camp and in there I recommend many of my favorite Internet marketing blogs. I’m adding yours to the list.
Keep up the good work my friend.
Best,

WOW that was some series content that you laid out there, I like the business modal and when you pin it down to only having to make 4 sales per day to make it big with this continuity process it is brilliant
