Google Buzz Just Wasn’t Enough
Posted on by Ryan Deiss in Social Media
I’m sure most of you have heard the rumor, but just in case you haven’t…
Google is rumored to be making another run at Facebook with Google ME. This, after the failure of Buzz, is Google’s attempt to get their foot in the door of Social Media for real.
It’s probably good timing seeing that Facebook is making their first strike at a search engine.
No info has been released as to how Google might actually flesh out their new Social Media platform, but if anyone has a chance to make it, I think Google’s got it.
Google’s cross-property integration really creates a nice setting for a central hub of social media that Google users could seamlessly access from other Google tools like Gmail and such.
I also think if Google is going to do this right, they’ll need to have more in mind than creating another place that they can barrage with ads. They’ve got to find their own unique way to create a user-centric experience.
You guys are smart, how do you think Google should go about Google ME? Comment Below and give me your predictions.

I tested google buzz and it is just like twitter, but I think google waves going well, this company (google)will never ever stop from creating ideas that will lead to keep their position as godfather of Internet…!!!

Before you pronounce Google Buzz a failure, you may want to look into it a bit farther.
Those of us who do more than just aggregate their tweets to Buzz are having tons of success.
Wave, mismarketed. Should have never been marketed as a social platform.
But 3 million college kids are coming back to college with Google Apps as their email and document provider with Wave waiting for them now too. 4 million more outside the US. That is called Growing up Google.
Lastly, The Social Network AKA how Zuckerberg stole Facebook is looking like a real movie, not a hoax.

Could impact FB even more if Zuckerberg is portrayed in a very negative light.
You tell me, I am a bit prejudice over Google. Do you really think FB is all that?

Facebook started out with a “demographic advantage”. They leveraged a user base that was fast and loose with personal information, and let them be their “test team” for how tolerant users would be of various data mining and usability tweaks.
I think Kenneth is right… make the privacy issue super simple, and come up with a privacy “tagline” that just kills facebooks rep.
Of course, the only real problem with that, is that Google is a massive data mining op just like facebook.
The Brave New World, is well underway…

As I said on Twitter reply, They basically have to rip off Facebook but be totally open ala Twitter and have a simple privacy policy. Being simplistic here, but that’s it. Make it MUCH more user friendly (I can’t stand FB’s clunky nav) and get ready for a big fight. FB has 500 MILLION users. I don’t care who you are, that will be a very hard nut to crack, but if anyone can do it it’s Google. They can’t half ass it like they have so far. Stop dipping your toe in and swim!

@Ryan Deiss, @Kenneth Holland – You are very right here guys. Google either does Google Me right or they are dead. Wave and Buzz were not failures, we all know that. But they were perceived as failures.
Even I, as a Google evangelist will admit that Google can not blow a Google Me. Do it right this time or you can count Google out.
However 3 million US college students return to school this fall to find Buzz and Wave waiting for them in Google Apps. This may in the end be a war for quality users rather than Farmville fan boys.
