Bing Is Growing While Google Is Flat-Lining
Posted on by Ryan Deiss in Search Engine Optimization
OK, the title sounds a little more severe than it is, but it’s mostly true. As the Bing-Yahoo merger nears its fruition, the tides seem to be changing as Bing is rising to the occasion.
The latest quarterly report from Efficient Frontier shows great news for Bing. Bing’s most recent quarter reveals that ad impressions are up 56% from the following year. What makes it even better is that Google ad impressions are virtually in the same position they were last year, giving Bing the chance to gain some ground.
And when it comes to ad clicks, Bing is up about 34% where as Google is DOWN 8%.
Sure this is good news for Bing, but I think it’s better news for us!
While Google still holds 75% market share of searches, Bing is showing signs of life. Tack this success on to the fact that the Yahoo-Bing merger is finally about to happen, this could mean we have a true search market contender on our hands. The competition we’ve all been hoping for may finally be on it’s way.
Do you trust that these numbers actually mean Bing has a chance? Comment Below!

The company’s name has worked itself into our vernacular. You don’t Yahoo something, or Bing something…you Google it. I think there is a lot to be said for that.

I think that in order for Bing to really have a chance to compete with Google it needs to create something innovative. Something that Google does not have. Maybe search results based on a person’s age/gender/occupation. Something extra. Maybe Bing should make a partnership with Facebook? I remember being pitched to buy a ppc keyword on leapfish.com. The guy told me Leap Fish will be the next “big search engine”. Leap Fish is no where near being the top search engine. I guess time will only tell what Bing will come up with.

It will certainly take a lot for Bing to get close to Google’s market share whether it be innovation or just doing what Google does in a better fashion. At this point another merger would just be too much with the Yahoo merger finally going through. But give it another few years and they may need to look else where

I kinda hope that Bing does make a showing, or even Facebook! I think it will be better for internet marketers because many of us live or die by Google’s whims. The more traffic strategies we have available, the less we have to rely on! Thanks for the post!

@Marketer Matt, I totally agree Matt! The more options we have to diversify, the stronger our SE campaigns can be.

I see a lot more television advertising of Bing, that could be part of why there’s more growth.
I think Bing has a chance but I myself still use Google.

Halleluja! Although we all know it best to play by the Google rules (like it or not)healthy competition is good in any business. As we have sat by and watched PPC increase wildly over the years maybe the increased competition with Bing and Facebook will be a reality check that will bring advertising back down to earth. Then again….maybe not! It will have to be a good thing.

Hey Ryan,
In my opinion, Google will always be THE big boy, at least for now and the near future.
But Bing is definitely a contender and I believe we’ll see great things from them.
Not to mention competition in the search market place will give birth and or improvement to useful features for us, the end user.
Also, as posted earlier in a post on this blog – http://drivingtraffic.com/facebook-the-next-frontier-for-seo/
“We’ve seen what Facebook did with Ads, so I think it’s fair to say their search engine has some strong potential to become a big time player, Especially since they have Bing powering it.”
Facebook is a social media powerhouse. Its only true rival being YouTube, owned by Google.
And the fact that it’s Powering Facebook Search gives Bing another advantage.
So yes, Bing does have a super chance to do battle with Google.
My guess, is more advertisers turn to Bing’s paid ads, competition will increase too, you’ll soon see PPC and ad prices increase. And eventually, Bing will flat line in this area as well.
It’ll be interesting to see how this all pans out. Don’t you think?

@Eric Bonnici, It will be entertaining to watch to say the least. We’ve been waiting on this for a few years now.

I’m very excited about Bing’s positive and fast! growth lately. Yes, I believe Bing may have a shot at the big leagues if the elevation continues in this way. I’m sure Google will strive for supremacy with a challenge or two, though consumers are getting smarter. Bing is a thinking tool. Many people will find this a pleasure and become more socially aware as well, leading to an improved #WOMM status.

I attribute this mostly due to the fact that Google commands such huge share of the SE market and Bing has a little. So there’s more wiggle room for Bing to experience growth. Hope it continues but we’ve been teased before!

@Kenneth Holland, You’re right on that, only time will tell if Bing is the real deal.
