Bing Has a Copycat named Google

Posted on by in Search Engine Optimization

CNN posted an interesting article that pulls back the veil a little deeper on the relationship of Google & Bing. It’s a wise observation to see how Google has piggybacked many of Bing’s innovations.

I don’t use Bing much, so I wasn’t quite aware of how obvious it was. Here’s a few examples of how Google copied Bing.

1-    After Bing launched it’s colorful, photographic design, Google quickly tried to the same thing by allowing users to add images. They even had a default image for the background.  Users didn’t like it, so they quickly recanted. (shameful)

2-    Just one day after Bing announced the integration of Twitter into it’s search results, Google quickly made a deal with Twitter too. (desperate)

3-    Google even ‘borrowed’ Bing’s search results layout by breaking search results into categories. (smart)

Maybe Bing isn’t getting the recognition it deserves. Right now it’s just been known as the 3rd place search engine, and I’m not sure any of us really believe that will ever change. (although we hope for it)

Do you guys like the things Google has copied from Bing and does it kind of make you want to give Bing some more search time to see if their innovations really are smarter?

Or are you so intergrated into Google’s apps (gmail, voice, chat, analytics) that you it wouldn’t make sense?

I tried to use Bing, as well as Yahoo!.
But the results that come after research are completely different and not much targeted as they can be in Google.

There is so much to do to take the number 1 in search engines.
Some good steps were made, but I think they need to act on research results by one side before.
    And integration on the other.

So for now I will use Google.
But keeping an eye on competitors :)

Thanks a lot for this article, I loved the image you choose, it’s so cute.

    See you,

Google also copied how bing display their image search results. I use bing from time to time as some of my sites do well in it. I do like bing but google is ingrained.

@Gary McCaffrey, yeah, which again was a good innovation to steal, making images much easier to browse.

“Google is ingrained”, a big reason that they’re going to last a while :)

I’m not surprised. Google is known for “reverse engineering” ideas or buying them out.

I’m an avid Google app user, but if Bing offers something Google doesn’t, I wouldn’t mind switching over (for that particular feature, that is).

@Ivan C., Yeah, Google is constantly buying out smaller companies to either prevent competition or to improve. I could see switching over as well if Bing was really able to innovate enough, but from a marketing perspective, I’d need them to get more searches :)
